Easter was around the corner, so he rigged up a machine that could decorate eggs with intricate patterns, mostly to entertain his kids. Realizing that this raw technical demo failed to convey the beauty of his vision, Shapiro set out to find a more exciting application. This was my first - but hardly my last - lesson that my feelings of fascination and excitement could not be depended upon to correlate with those of others! At the end of the demo, I turned my gaze from the motors to my audience, and was met with boredom, annoyance, and a lot of worried looks. Then variations of doing that one motor at a time, different directions. When I typed something on the keyboard, each motor rotated exactly one revolution. I gathered them down in my basement shop and presented my grand demonstration: two motors sitting on a desk with pieces of tape stuck to their shafts, looking like little flags. Friends and family knew that I had been consumed by this obsession for months, and I was at last ready to show off my great achievement.

Sisyphus started taking pre-orders this weekend via their website. Many of the original designs are meditative mandala-like configurations, but it’s also possible to program the marble to create continuous line drawings or custom messages. The coffee table design includes a bed of sand with a magnetic steel marble that continuously traces programmed patterns through the malleable material.
The 2016 project raised $1,924,018 and is, to date, the most-funded campaign in the history of Kickstarter’s art category. Sisyphus, the wildly successful Kickstarter-funded kinetic table designed by Bruce Shapiro ( previously), is now available to the public via pre-order.
